Gun Control Now!

In the wake of the horrific Sandy Hook shootings, the issue of gun control is finally once again front and center in our national conversation.  President Obama has now committed himself publicly to doing "something."  But what can we do now to push this debate forward and get change enacted swiftly?

Share here your ideas, suggest actions we can take right away and list the names of advocacy groups that will be spearheading this effort nationwide.  Let's make this Group a hub for activist information about how to bring about sane and effective gun control in the United States.

Yes, Anna, ignore any doubts you may have. Don't question the authorities ; those honest men who have always responded to your concerns--stay 'in your place'--they're much more qualified to guide you than are you---mind your manners....

Anna, best to ignore the troll.  Engaging him only encourages him.

You're good, Ed. I'm reminded of Mark Twain--beatifully eloquent, menorable phraseology. He stands even at the shoulders with folks like : Aesop, Paul, the  author of 'Beowolf', Shakespear, Rolling Thunder, ETC. Don't get a big head, the only similarity I recognize is MT's ability to put affection on deceit, a 'Stockholm Syndrome ' effect. Your argument/logic/statistics, History fail on  the world Forum ; your 'Agenda' is obvious....

Thanks for the explanation Edward.  I agree that the situation is becoming worse, the gun lobby is becoming more and more assertive by the day and our politicians progressively more spineless (what else is new?). And it certainly does not help when people come up with outlandish explanations instead of focusing into reality and what could be done.  I have been following the medical side of things because in addition to my own work with NYAGV, my sister is a physician and like all doctors (except for those who are GOP members of the Congress) has been outraged by the NRA's hold on public health issues. And this latest, with Dr. Murphy's nomination really tops off everything. I agree that we need a new and better plan of attack because the situation is getting worse. The sad truth is that nothing much will happen until another outrage happens...

Anna, there are no such requirements.  Bowen Roberts has been a troll on this board for more than two years and the moderator has received numerous complaints about him but has done nothing.  It's why a lot of people left this board.

That said, here is a 3 paragraph quote from today's Financial Times: "We didn’t get tighter controls on guns in the US. We got a more assertive gun rights lobby. The National Rifle Association is now expanding its influence in the political affairs of this country.

Things have reached the point where the NRA is playing a leading role in the selection of the next US surgeon-general. That’s our doctor-in-chief – the person charged with promoting the nation’s public health.

To be fair to the NRA, the organisation and its members have been deeply involved with the medical world over the years. Their efforts have helped put a lot of people in hospitals – boosting the sales of sutures, salves, sterilising agents, bandages and other medical supplies and services in the process."

We need a new and better plan of attack because the gun idiots have become bigger, badder and dumber.

We are all entitled to our views and opinions, no matter how outlandish.  However I expect that in this particular forum it is a requirement to follow common courtesy rules and not resort to insults, no matter how much we might disagree with each other.

You are deluded if you think this is a partisan issue--to promote this notion is to lie. I view this entire controversy as Neocon/Zionist agenda--there is NO party affiliation there....

Most of you must have heard about the latest outrage in the Congress.  The NRA has convinced all republican senators (surprise!) and 10 democrats from conservative states to oppose the nomination of Dr. Vivek Murthy, one of the most qualified physicians for the position of Surgeon General because of his "crime" of having signed a letter to allow physicians treating gun violence victims to ask the families about guns in the house and to allow the Centre for Decease Control in Atlanta to collect information and treat gun violence as the public health issue that it really is.  I just signed a petition by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence to the White House asking to insist on Dr. Murthy's nomination.  This country needs public servants like him. Please consider doing the same.

Continue advancing Dr. Vivek Murthy's nomination as Surgeon General—despite opposition by the National Rifle Association

I have not gotten into the discussion for a while now, not for lack of interest, far from it, but because I have been immersed in work, gun control and regular.  On the gun control side, as some of you know, originally I started working here in NYC with OFA but I started turning toward New Yorkers Against Gun Violence,  contacting legislators nationally and in the state, when there seemed to be some hope for background checks legislation in the House.  Then our efforts started concentrating on supporting/defending the NY State SAFE Act, the first gun control legislation passed in the country after Newtown. As I became more immersed with the work I was amazed to realize that the SAFE Act is literally under assault by well organized and funded pro-gun groups upstate.  This is intensifying as we are getting close to the governor's re election.  I was asked to join the Communications Committee of the organization, which I gladly did as I truly believe that no matter how disheartening at times, we simply cannot afford to pull back and lessen our efforts to inform and educate otherwise well meaning people why we need strong gun control laws.  My work mainly consists of writing letters to the editor and op eds that we send to upstate papers. It is a team work and everybody is extremely motivated on how to further the cause.  Since we are scattered around the state and most of us have other jobs, we normally have a monthly phone meeting to strategize and bring up new ideas, but overall we are on daily contact among ourselves and with the Executive Director of NYAGV.  Despite NY being one of the most liberal states with low gun ownership for its size, the vehemence against the SAFE Act and politicians supporting it, especially the governor, is breath taking and unfortunately the silent majority that supports stronger gun control laws do not realize how determined the gun lobby is to undermine the laws, convincing many law abiding gun owners who, when faced with the facts would support the law, that their God given right to carry any weapon, any where, any time they feel like it, is in danger!  As I said, it is an uphill battle but none of us is a "giver upper"!  We are also working to increase the membership of NYAGV, which, given the size of the population is quite low. In fact I would like to invite any New Yorkers in this group to join NYAGV, either by going directly to the organization's site or through contacting me.  You can choose to be as active as you want, but I am sure any passionate person in this group will want to do something especially seeing what is happening in other states (Georgia, FL) recently, or the disgraceful way some democratic Senator refuse to confirm the new Surgeon General because their master the NRA tells them so!
